MATCH REPORT 23/9/07

Freethorpe played their first home fixture for the season against Bohemians A. Looking for their first win in the league and after a good 7-3 victory in the cup last week the lads were keen to continue winning. Both teams were up for the game and appeared very evenly matched. Freethorpe played well despite being short of players which meant they had no subs. With Aaron taking the right back role, Jake moved to left back and Sam and James played their first full games. Brogan, Ollie and Sam stayed calm in defence neatly clearing the Bohemians attacks. Reece and Mitch pressed forward trying to add to their goal tally but found a excellent keeper in their way. The Bohemians finally broke the deadlock, taking the lead after 20mins. Freethorpe pushed forward again with Ryan L. shooting from the left only to see his shot go wide. Another effort saw Danny stroke the ball past the keeper from close range, only to see it disallowed for offside. Aaron pushed down the right wing only to be caught by a crunching tackle. Reece stepped up for the freekick, his effort narrowly going over the bar. Coming in at halftime 1-0 down Freethorpe were buoyant, convinced that they could win the game with the hill and the wind in their favour for the second half. They pressed the opposing goal from the off winning corner after corner with Aaron coming forward from defence to put in inch perfect crosses it was only a matter of time before Freethorpe equalised. At the back Brogan continued to be a big asset, with his neat footwork and speed he cleared up several Bohemian attacks. The reward came for Freethorpe on 45mins when James scored his first goal for the team, a superb header from yet another corner. With both teams not giving up the win the game turned into an end to end battle with Freethorpe having a good deal of the possession and thumping shot after shot at the Bohemians goal only to see their on form keeper save every effort. On the break from another Freethorpe corner the Bohemians rounded the Freethorpe defence, the on rushing Marcus in goal stood no chance against the two attacking players and with just a few minutes to go Freethorpe found themselves 2-1 down. From the kick off Reece went on a spirited run beating several defenders only to look on disbelievingly as the keeper made another terrific save. At the final whistle the score remained 2-1 with Brogan named M.o.M. An entertaining game and one that both teams should be proud of. Thanks to Jim for another fine refereeing performance.

MATCH REPORT 14/10/07

Freethorpe played the Blunderston Magpies this week. After a heavy defeat in the cup last week Freethorpe had to up their work rate to start picking up the points. With Aaron settling into his new right wing position and Reece playing the lone striker, two inexperienced players moved into midfield. Freethorpe started brightly but the Magpies took an early lead. Freethorpe soon hit back when Tom took a freekick which allowed Reece a run on the keeper and score a confidence boosting goal. The Magpies took back the lead, then Reece was awarded a penalty. His shot only found the keepers hands. Freethorpe kept up the pressure and were rewarded when a high cross was met first by Aaron's head then Ryan L. who's neat finish brought the scores back level. Marcus worked hard in goal making some fantastic saves but he was unable to deny the Magpies from scoring twice more. In the dying seconds of the half  Reece took a corner from which Aaron scored his first of the season. The score after a very entertaining first half were 4-3 to the Magpies. The second half saw a couple of changes to the midfield with mixed results. Ryan L. come close to scoring a few times, Ryan M. pushed forward from right back with his best performance of the season so far but the midfield failed to impose their presence on the pitch. With Freethorpe unable to score and the Magpies finding the back of the net twice past the improving Marcus the final score was 6-3. A gritty performance by Freethorpe and a big improvement from previous week but still the three points elude them. Big thanks again to the Man in Black.

MATCH REPORT 16/12/07

Freethorpe faced top of the league Caister, with Freethorpe fielding a bare eleven, it was to be a tough game. Freethorpe felt  up to the challenge and started brightly but were unlucky to concede an early goal. However they continued to play some impressive passing football. With the squad showing much improvement from previous weeks the equaliser was bound to come. Reece played a low cross into the box from a narrow angle and the confident Aaron slotted the ball past the keeper. With Ollie taking up his familiar centre back role Freethorpe's defence worked hard under the pressure from Caister. A high through ball from Tom found Reece, his shot taking Freethorpe into the lead. Not content to sit on a one goal lead and desperate for a win to help them off the bottom of the table, Freethorpe pressed Caister with Ryan L. coming close to netting more than once. Freethorpe lost their way briefly early in the second half with players guilty of ball watching. It took two goals from Caister before they regained their shape and composure. With M.o.M Tom leading from the back, the defence, assisted by some brave saves by Marcus, stood firm for the remainder of the match. Jake and Ryan M. came close to scoring for Freethorpe, but despite this much improved team effort the game finished with Caister the winners 3-2. After this confidence boosting performance Freethorpe should go on in the New Year and push  to get the results they deserve.
